How to Set Up Passkeys Without Losing Account Access

Passkeys can simplify sign-in, but backup devices and recovery routes matter. Use this checklist before switching.

Before deciding, identify the exact problem you want to solve and the information you can verify independently. The steps below focus on practical checks, common failure points, and what to do next.

Understand the sign-in change

A passkey uses cryptographic credentials managed by a device or credential provider rather than a password typed into a website. A fingerprint, face check, or device PIN generally unlocks its use locally; the biometric itself is not sent to the site as the passkey.

Passkeys resist many phishing attempts because a credential is tied to the real website or app. They do not eliminate every risk, particularly an unlocked stolen device or a poorly protected recovery account.

Prepare your devices

Update your phone or computer and check that a secure screen lock is enabled. Review whether your passkey will sync through a credential manager or remain device-bound, as this affects what happens after a lost device.

If you rely on one phone for everything, confirm an alternative recovery or second-device sign-in before disabling other methods. Store recovery codes securely where the affected device cannot be the only copy.

Create a passkey on the legitimate website

Sign in by typing the account's official address, navigate to security settings, and follow the provider's passkey setup steps. Confirm the account name and device before accepting prompts.

Test signing out and signing in again while the original recovery method still works. Do not delete passwords or backup methods until you understand the provider's recovery process.

Maintain an account recovery map

Record which important accounts have passkeys, where the credentials are stored, and which secondary device or recovery method works. Avoid putting the only recovery record into a locked device that could be lost.

When replacing a phone, migrate or create a new passkey and test it before wiping the old phone. Review old trusted devices in account security settings.
